Description

Romantic Painter (second half of the 19th century) – The Soldier.

Oil on canvas, in a carved wooden frame.

Provenance label on the reverse.

The painting depicts a young soldier in medievalizing military dress: dark jerkin with red and ochre bands, red breeches, a plumed beret, and a lance. The figure is shown in a watchful pose, leaning against the battlements of a castle, with his gaze turned toward the horizon. The careful rendering of fabrics and materials is characteristic of Romantic historical-military painting produced in Central Europe during the second half of the nineteenth century. The craquelure network visible on the surface is consistent with the age of the work.

Condition report: Canvas in original state. Good condition of the painted surface.
