The painting depicts a middle-aged man in dark attire, shown in half-length against a neutral brown background. The sitter wears a black coat and a white jabot, characteristic dress of the educated bourgeoisie of the first half of the nineteenth century. His right hand rests on a book, a conventional attribute denoting the intellectual or professional standing of the subject. The handling of the face shows a sound technical command of volume and light, with focused illumination that draws attention to the sitter’s composed and sober expression. The chromatic range, dominated by browns and blacks, is consistent with Italian bourgeois portraiture of the second quarter of the 19th century.
