Description
Workshop of Giulio Carpioni (Venice 1613 – Vicenza 1678) – Moses Brings Water from the Rock.
Oil on canvas, in a wooden frame.
The painting depicts the biblical episode of Moses striking water from the rock (Exodus 17:1–7): the patriarchal figure, draped in heavy brown and ochre robes, dominates the upper centre with his staff directed toward the rock from which water flows at right. Around him, a varied crowd collects water in amphorae and drinks. The compositional structure and figure types follow closely the models developed by Carpioni for multi-figure biblical subjects, of which this canvas represents a good-quality workshop derivation.
Condition report: Relined canvas. Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface, with traces of old restorations and wear.
