An interior scene animated by figures in seventeenth-century costume, set in a room with wooden beam ceiling and large fireplace. The episode, formal and narrative in tone, is characteristic of the historical-literary genre painting widespread in nineteenth-century Europe, with a possible reference to Shakespearean iconography. The loose brushwork and chromatic sensibility recall the Romantic tradition of Flemish derivation.
