Description

Vittorio Antonio Cargnel (Venice 1872 – Milan 1931) – Landscape with Village and Figures by the Lake.

Oil on canvas, in a coeval carved wood frame.

Signed lower right: «V. A. Cargnel».

Vittorio Antonio Cargnel trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice under Giacomo Favretto, developing his landscape sensibility within the late nineteenth-century Venetian realist tradition. His painting is marked by a fluid brushwork, a palette built on warm atmospheric tones, and a diffused treatment of light that blends naturalist tradition with the influence of Lombard landscape painting. The canvas depicts a rural village with a bell-towered church on the left, along a dirt road populated by a few figures. To the right, a broad expanse of lake water opens up, with a solitary figure on the bank, a moored boat, and a mountainous background veiled in the light of sunset. The presence of a telegraph pole situates the scene in a late nineteenth-century context. The composition reflects Cargnel’s ability to combine naturalistic observation with an intense atmospheric quality, here dominated by warm pink and ashen tones characteristic of the artist’s landscape production around the turn of the century.

Condition report: Original canvas. Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface.
