Description
Venetian painter (17th century) – The Chariot of Apollo.
Oil on canvas, in a lacquered and gilded wooden frame.
The painting depicts the solar chariot of Apollo in a dynamic composition dominated by figures in motion against a luminous sky. The elongated horizontal format develops around the god and his horses, rendered with a fluid brushstroke and a handling of light that recalls the great tradition of seventeenth-century Venetian painting. The warm palette, built on ochre and golden tones enlivened by red and brown accents, and the plastic treatment of the figures firmly place the work within the Venetian school of the 17th century, in a register close to the grand decorative tradition of Baroque ceiling and wall painting.
Condition report: Relined canvas. Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface; traces of old restorations and wear are present.
