Venetian painter (early 20th century) – Venetian canal with bridge and Gothic palace.
Oil on panel, in lacquered and gilded wooden frame.
The painting depicts a Venetian canal with, in the foreground to the left, the side elevation of a Gothic palace with an ochre façade, a staircase descending to the water, and a low arched bridge at the centre, beneath which a gondola is moored. In the background the buildings open onto a silent lagoon, rendered in cool grey-green tones beneath a dynamic sky. The palette, dominated by ochre, green and grey with orange accents in the water’s reflections, and the rapid, impastoed brushwork are consistent with the Venetian en plein air painting of the early twentieth century.
