Description
Italian painter (18th century) – Interior of a cellar during the grape harvest.
Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
The painting depicts the interior of a barrel-vaulted cellar with three figures engaged in harvest activities: in the foreground, a young man in a white shirt carries a copper vessel and steadies a wooden pole together with a second worker; in the background, a third figure tends to the large casks. On a small table to the left, copper vessels and a white ceramic jug are arranged. The scene, built on a brown and earth-toned palette, reflects a familiarity with the Northern and Flemish genre painting tradition as received through eighteenth-century Italian painting.
Condition report: Lined canvas. Good condition of the painted surface; varnish oxidation noted.
