Description
F.W. Kirtley (British, 19th century) – Mountain Landscape with Sheep.
Oil on canvas, in a gilded wooden frame.
Signed lower right: «F.W. Kirtley».
A British painter active in the second half of the nineteenth century, F.W. Kirtley works within the tradition of English Romantic landscape painting, in particular rural subjects set in the Scottish Highlands. The painting depicts an expansive landscape featuring a stream in the foreground, a flock of sheep grazing on a grassy slope, and a mountainous backdrop under a dramatic cloudy sky. The rendering of the animals’ fleece and the surrounding vegetation is handled with care, while the animated sky lends the scene an atmosphere characteristic of Victorian-era British landscape painting.
Condition report: Original canvas. Good overall condition of the painted surface.
