Description
Italian painter (17th century) – The Entombment of Christ.
Oil on canvas, in lacquered and gilded wood frame.
The painting depicts the Entombment of Christ: the lifeless body of the Redeemer, wrapped in a shroud, is supported by two men as they lower it into the tomb. To the left, the Virgin witnesses the scene with joined hands, while a kneeling female figure kisses his feet. The composition unfolds against a rocky background with a cloudy sky, following a well-established model in Italian 17th-century devotional painting, with evident Flemish influence in the rendering of the flesh tones and the colouring of the garments.
Condition report: Relined canvas. Good state of conservation of the painted surface, with some wear and minor signs of age.
