Description
Workshop of Jacopo Bassano (Bassano del Grappa c. 1510 – 1592) – The Entombment of Christ.
Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
The painting depicts the entombment of Christ, with figures gathered closely around the body supported by a shroud. The bearded elder holding the body from behind, the veiled women in the foreground, and the figure in red on the right follow with precision the iconographic scheme of Jacopo Bassano’s 1574 altarpiece at Santa Maria in Vanzo, Padua. The handling of light, which emerges from a dark background and models volumes with strong chiaroscuro, and the popular characterization of the figures are distinctive features of the Bassanesque tradition, widely reproduced by the workshop and the master’s sons throughout the 16th and 17th centuries.
Condition report: Lined canvas. Good overall condition of the painted surface, with traces of wear.
