European painter in the Chinese manner (18th century) – Oriental scene with river boat.
Oil on canvas, in carved and gilded wooden frame.
The composition, executed on a black ground, depicts three figures aboard a boat on a waterway crossed by a bridge, set within an exotic landscape populated by palm trees and architecture in the Oriental taste. The use of deep black as the dominant chromatic field, combined with gold and red details, lends the work a decorative character fully in keeping with the chinoiserie fashion that pervaded European artistic production throughout the eighteenth century.
Condition report: Lined canvas. Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface, with signs of ageing and wear.
