Description

Pair of Gilt Bronze Winged Lion Andirons. France, early 19th century.

Pair of finely chased and gilt bronze andirons depicting crouching winged lions in a confronted arrangement, with open mouths and large spread wings. The casting shows careful attention to the mane, feathered wings and extended forepaws. The tails terminate in scrolls. The rear support is in wrought iron. Empire taste, consistent with French production of the early decades of the 19th century.

Condition report: Gilt bronze with patina of use and diffuse greenish oxidation, particularly visible on the lower portions of the figures. Overall good structural condition.
