Description
German manufacture (late 19th century) – Madame Juliette Récamier reclining on a chaise longue.
Polychrome porcelain group depicting Madame Juliette Récamier seated on a chaise longue with a scrolled back and crimson cushion. The figure wears a yellow off-the-shoulder dress with a white floral-patterned shawl and holds a small bouquet of roses. The composition relates to the iconography of the celebrated Parisian salonnière, made popular among others by Jacques-Louis David’s unfinished portrait of 1800, now in the Louvre, Paris. The modelling is careful, with well-rendered drapery and polychromy.
Condition report: Good overall condition of the painted surface. Restorations to one flower and the fingers of the left hand.
