French sculptor (19th century) – Bacchanal.
Sculptural group in patinated terracotta, modelled in the round.
The group depicts two nymphs and a satyr in a dancing movement, with a cornucopia filled with grape clusters at the base. The modelling recalls the language of Claude Michel, known as Clodion (Nancy 1738 – Paris 1814), evident in the sensual rendering of the figures, the softness of the surfaces and the lively treatment of the garlanded hair. The work belongs to the revival of eighteenth-century Bacchic subjects that spread in France throughout the nineteenth century.
