Description
Quarter round library steps in turned and carved wood. Italy, 19th century.
Quarter round library steps composed of four triangular treads radiating around a central turned baluster shaft, crowned by a ball finial. The frame, entirely turned and carved, rests on shaped legs joined by curved stretchers. The tread surfaces are covered in green leather with a fine gilt border, typical of nineteenth century study and library furnishings. The piece served as a practical aid for reaching volumes stored on the highest shelves.
Condition report: Good condition, with traces of natural ageing to the wood and slight wear to the leather coverings, consistent with age.
