The painting depicts a young gentleman in formal attire, a brown coat with gold embroidery, powdered wig, portrayed before a harpsichord with one hand resting on the keys. An architectural opening in the background reveals a landscape with trees and cloudy sky. The composition belongs to the tradition of musical portraiture widespread in European courts during the early 18th century, with references to the French milieu, and the quality of execution is evident in the facial rendering and the detail of the embroidered costume.
