Russian manufacture (19th-20th century) – Young man with samovar.

Full figure in various marbles and hardstones, in a display box.

The sculpture depicts a young man in traditional dress, portrayed holding a gilt metal samovar with both hands. The figure is entirely made of marbles and hardstones of different colours, skilfully assembled to render the various elements of the clothing and complexion: the face and hands in pale stone, the tunic and trousers in veined green marble, the footwear in red stone. The piece draws on the taste of the celebrated hardstone figures produced by the House of Fabergé between the late 19th and early 20th century, a genre that enjoyed great popularity in Russian lapidary production, depicting popular types and traditional trades, often enriched with gilt metal elements.

Condition report: Good state of preservation, with minor signs of wear consistent with the age of the piece.

Full figure in various marbles and hardstones, in a display box.

The sculpture depicts an elderly man seated on a richly decorated throne, his hands folded in his lap over a draped blanket. The figure is entirely made of marbles and hardstones of different colours, skilfully assembled to render the various elements of the clothing and complexion: the face in pale stone, the coat in dark green marble, the collar in white stone, the blanket over the legs in mottled yellow-brown stone. The throne, with a shaped outline, is made of mottled brownish-red hardstone, with agate armrests and a gilt metal front panel with decorative motifs; a small white stone applied at the collar further enriches the figure. The piece draws on the taste of the celebrated hardstone figures produced by the House of Fabergé between the late 19th and early 20th century, a genre that enjoyed great popularity in Russian lapidary production, depicting popular types and scenes of everyday life.

Condition report: Good general state of preservation, with traces of ageing, wear, and old restorations; repairs present to the base.

Quarter round library steps composed of four triangular treads radiating around a central turned baluster shaft, crowned by a ball finial. The frame, entirely turned and carved, rests on shaped legs joined by curved stretchers. The tread surfaces are covered in green leather with a fine gilt border, typical of nineteenth century study and library furnishings. The piece served as a practical aid for reaching volumes stored on the highest shelves.

Workshop of Valentino Panciera Besarel – Carved wood writing table. Venice, 19th century.

A refined writing table entirely carved in wood, raised on a tripod base with crossed faux bamboo legs joined by an X-form stretcher. The book-shaped hinged top is finely engraved with floral motifs and fitted with brass clasps and hinges. Surmounting the top is an elaborate carved wood group depicting a reclining putto in the act of writing with a quill, flanked by an inkwell and two small pots, resting on a shaped base carved with acanthus leaves and a central mask.

The piece can be attributed to the Venetian workshop of Valentino Panciera Besarel, a sculptor active in Venice in the second half of the 19th century, renowned for the naturalistic flair of his carved compositions, often animated by putti and exotic-taste subjects, as seen here in the faux bamboo legs, a typical element of the chinoiserie fashion popular in late 19th-century Venetian furnishing.

Condition report: Overall good condition, with minor age-related wear consistent with the period. The lid of one of the two small pots is missing.
