John MacWhirter RA (Slateford, Edinburgh 1839 – London 1911) — View of Loch Lomond at Sunset.
Oil on canvas, unframed.

John MacWhirter, Royal Academician and student at the Trustees’ Academy in Edinburgh, is among the most representative Scottish landscape painters of the second half of the nineteenth century, known for his romantic views of the Highlands, lochs, and Scottish islands, with particular attention to atmospheric effects. The painting depicts Loch Lomond at sunset, with the mountains mirrored in the still waters of the lake. The low sunlight illuminates the rocks with warm tones ranging from red to golden brown, while the softly graduated sky and reflective water surface lend the scene a contemplative quality characteristic of the artist’s finest work. On the right bank, a small rural cottage provides the only sign of human presence in the landscape.
Condition report: Original canvas with reinforcing strips applied to the stretcher. Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface, with signs of aging and wear.
