The scene depicts a mixed group of animals — two adult cattle and a calf in the foreground, accompanied by a large flock of sheep led by a shepherd — in an open landscape at dusk. Dark trees silhouetted against the sky frame the composition on the left, while a pink sunset illuminates the plain in the background. The cattle are rendered with anatomical accuracy and chromatic sensitivity, moving naturally towards the foreground. The brushwork is loose and vigorous, particularly in the sky and the foreground terrain. The style shows affinities with the German and central European animalist tradition of the period.
