Description

Bureau Plat desk in lacquered wood with chinoiserie details and gilded bronze applications. Paris, second half of the 19th century.

Refined Louis XV-style bureau plat desk, made during the Napoleon III period, an expression of the eclectic taste and historicist revival typical of the Second French Empire.

Made entirely of black lacquered wood with gilded and painted chinoiserie decorations depicting oriental landscapes with figures, architecture, trees, and birds. Numerous mercury-gilded bronze appliques, including corner mounts with rocaille motifs and finely chiseled acanthus leaf-shaped sabots (feet). Contoured top with gilded bronze frame, covered in carmine red leather and two side drawers.
