The sitter wears a black coat and a white jabot, characteristic dress of the educated bourgeoisie of the first half of the nineteenth century. His right hand rests on a book, a conventional attribute denoting the intellectual or professional standing of the subject. The handling of the face shows a sound technical command of volume and light, with focused illumination that draws attention to the sitter&#8217;s composed and sober expression. The chromatic range, dominated by browns and blacks, is consistent with Italian bourgeois portraiture of the second quarter of the 19th century.<\/p>\n<p>Condition report: Relined canvas.
