Best known for portraits and figurative compositions, he also worked extensively as an illustrator for major publications including Harper’s Weekly and Scribner’s Monthly. The portrait depicts a young woman in traditional dress, wearing a dark bodice with silver frogging, wide-sleeved white shirt, and a red bow at the chest; around her neck a gold and turquoise enamel pendant on a fine chain, and at her ear a floral earring. The figure is set within an illusionistic oval on a neutral background shaded in ochre and pale blue, a compositional device common in bourgeois portraiture of the late nineteenth century. The face is carefully rendered with soft modelling and close attention to the details of dress and jewelry.<\/p>\n
Condition report: Relined canvas.
