His work is characterised by a nervous, incisive line capable of conveying psychological tension and popular humanity with great economy of means. In this 1946 drawing, a fortune teller is depicted studying cards laid out on a table, her hands clasped before her face in a gesture of concentration. The ink line, rapid and assured, constructs the figure’s face with the expressive directness typical of the artist’s finest graphic work: the deep-set eyes and fixed gaze give the subject an almost theatrical intensity. In the background, a few swift marks suggest an interior without defining it, leaving the full compositional weight on the central figure.<\/p>\n
Condition report: Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface, with normal signs of ageing consistent with the age of the work.
