Turin, 18th century.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A rare decorative plate in wood, a fine example of the Piedmontese\u00a0<em>lacca povera<\/em>\u00a0tradition of the 18th century. The technique involved the application of small hand-coloured engravings onto a wooden support, subsequently sealed with transparent varnish layers as an economical alternative to costly Oriental lacquerware. The decoration is arranged in concentric registers: at the centre, within a roundel on a turquoise ground, a bucolic landscape with trees and architectural elements; in the intermediate band on a vermilion ground, four large polylobed cartouches enclose architectural capriccios with bridges, obelisks and ruins, enriched by naturalistic elements.
