Giosti was a painter active in the nineteenth century within the Neapolitan landscape tradition, a school that found its preferred subjects along the Gulf of Naples and the Tyrrhenian islands. The view is taken from the northern side of the island, probably from the area of Casamicciola or Lacco Ameno, and encompasses the harbour with its pier, the coastal town, and, in the background to the left, the smoking profile of Vesuvius across the Gulf. In the foreground, along a cobbled path, figures in local dress (a shepherdess with goats and a rider on a donkey) lend the composition the character of southern Romantic vedutismo. The handling is fluid and luminous, with an atmospheric rendering of sky and sea consistent with Campanian vedutistic production of the second half of the nineteenth century.<\/p>\n<p>Condition report: Good state of conservation of the painted surface, with signs of ageing and wear.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>O.
