The composition is dominated by the row of trees and the balustrade along the canal, where gondolas and cargo boats are moored. The figures in the foreground, strolling along the promenade, recall the typical repertoire of Venetian view-painting staffage figures, a formula common among small souvenir paintings made for the nineteenth-century tourist market.
