The three small panels, united in a single frame, document his customary practice of painting from life, executed en plein air over the course of several years. The first panel depicts the Riva degli Schiavoni with figures along the waterfront and the open lagoon in the background; the second shows a view of the Grand Canal with the palaces reflected in the water; the third depicts a twilight scene with a group of figures in the foreground and the silhouette of the city fading into the lagoon fog. The brushwork is both loose and structured, with rapid strokes of color that evoke the tradition of Venetian macchia, while the play of light—gray glazes of sky, streaks of light on the walls and clothing—reveals the tonal sensitivity that characterizes his mature work.

Condition report: The painted surface is in good condition.

Beppe Ciardi (Venice 1875 – Quinto di Treviso 1932) – Triptych of Venetian views.
