A member of the Royal Society of British Artists, he travelled extensively across Spain, Italy, North Africa and the Middle East, developing a particular fondness for Venetian and Orientalist subjects.<\/p>\n<p>The painting depicts a lively scene of everyday Venetian life along the Grand Canal: a greengrocer, his boat laden with fruit and vegetables, offers his wares to two women standing at a doorway, one of them absorbed in needlework. Set against time-worn fa\u00e7ades and flower-filled balconies, the composition captures, through fluid brushwork and luminous colour, the picturesque atmosphere of the Venetian canals so dear to late Victorian taste.<\/p>\n<p>Condition report: Original canvas.
