Description
S.W. Clifford (British, late 19th century) – Wooded Landscape with Waterfall.
Oil on canvas, unframed.
Signed lower left: “S.W. Clifford”.
S.W. Clifford was a British painter active in the second half of the nineteenth century, working within the tradition of the Romantic landscape as established by the English school. His work demonstrates a confident handling of atmospheric effects and a sensitivity to filtered light through dense vegetation, in keeping with the conventions of Victorian landscape painting. The painting depicts a wooded gorge through which a stream descends in cascades over moss-covered boulders, while in the background a lattice iron bridge crosses the torrent amid overhanging trees. The composition is built in depth, with a shadowed foreground opening gradually toward a luminous central zone. The brushwork is precise in the rendering of foliage and moving water, with a well-balanced palette of greens and browns.
Condition report: Original canvas. Good state of conservation of the painted surface, with signs of ageing and wear.
