Description

Pio Semeghini (Quistello 1878 – Verona 1964) – Falzè di Piave.

Mixed media drawing, charcoal and pastels on paper, within passe-partout, in a wooden frame.

Signed lower left: «Falzè di Piave. Semeghini».

Pio Semeghini trained between Venice and Paris, where he came into contact with post-Impressionist and Fauvist circles, developing a personal language based on chromatic synthesis and lightness of line. One of the leading figures of Italian twentieth-century painting, he was among the founders of the Ca’ Pesaro group and a key reference for Venetian painting of the last century. The drawing depicts a hilly landscape near Falzè di Piave, a locality in the Marca Trevigiana held dear by the artist. The view opens onto a broad green expanse animated by trees and scattered houses on the hillside, with the roof of a rural building in the foreground. The mixed charcoal and pastel technique allows Semeghini to capture with few strokes the vibrant luminosity of the Venetian countryside, in an immediate and freshly executed rendering.

Condition report: Good state of conservation of the paper support; signs of ageing and wear are present.
