Description

French painter (18th century) – The Allusion of the Bellows.

Oil on canvas, unframed.

The scene depicts an interior with three full-length figures: on the left, a man in dark coat with tricorn hat and white collar, beside a young woman in a teal dress with white apron and bonnet; on the right, a second man in green coat lifts the covers of a canopied bed with red drapery, pointing expressively at the mattress. A fireplace bellows rests on the bed, a detail that lends the scene an allusive quality consistent with the title. The composition, costumes, and interior setting are consistent with the French genre painting tradition of the 18th century, within the tradition of bourgeois narrative and moralistic scenes. Condition report: Relined canvas.

Good overall condition of the painted surface, with traces of old restorations and wear.
