Description

Turned wood box. Northern Europe, 17th century.

A lidded box turned entirely from exotic wood. The truncated-cone body is articulated by a series of concentric circular mouldings tapering progressively upward, giving the piece a rhythmic pyramidal profile. The lid, of the same workmanship, is surmounted by a multi-tiered turned knob. The base is shaped and rests on spherical feet. The exotic wood used points directly to the trade routes of the East India Companies, through which precious raw materials from Asia and the Americas reached European markets throughout the 17th century, supplying a production of desk and apothecary wares aimed at a cultivated and wealthy clientele.

Condition report: Generally good condition. Ancient woodworm present. Some losses to the base. Period-appropriate wear and patina throughout.
