Description
Wooden money box with applied decoration. Italy, 19th century.
Small hinged box in fir wood, entirely covered with printed paper applied to simulate pyrographed decoration. The lid features a central field with radial grain pattern, framed by a Greek meander border and stylized foliate motifs at the corners; the outer walls repeat the same decorative scheme. The interior is in plain wood. The slot on the front and on the inner lid reveals its original function as a money box. A piece of popular production, of documentary interest for nineteenth-century Italian decorative craftsmanship.
Condition report: Good overall condition, with signs of wear, small losses to the decorative paper surface, and an abraded area at one corner of the lid.
