Description

Italian sculptor (17th–18th century) – Pair of archaic lions.

Pair of figures in carved walnut wood.

The two lions, carved in the round, are depicted in a lying pose with their heads facing forward. Each figure bears a shaped block on its back, decorated with foliate motifs. The carving is competent and well-executed, effectively rendering the mane and forepaws. The wooden surface, uniformly dark in tone, shows a use patina consistent with the dating. Their modest dimensions and the conformation of the back suggest a likely original use as decorative elements applied to fine furniture.

Condition report: Good state of preservation. Wear patina. Age-related signs consistent with the period.
