Oil on paper laid on canvas, in a carved wooden frame.

Signed lower left: «Caffi».

Ippolito Caffi (1809-1866) was one of the best-known Italian view painters of the nineteenth century, noted for his atmospheric rendering of light and for his views of Venice, Rome and other European cities. The present painting, by a follower close to his circle, reflects his luminous sensibility and taste for scenographic framing.

The view depicts the Tiber towards Castel Sant’Angelo, with the bridge animated by figures in the foreground and the dome of St Peter’s in the background. The small figures along the riverbank animate the composition, while the steamboat on the river introduces a note of modernity dear to Caffi himself.

Condition report: Good state of preservation of the paper support and of the painted surface.
