Description

Francesco Tironi (Venice 1745 – Venice 1797) – Veneto landscape with shepherds and livestock.

Oil on canvas, in a carved, lacquered and gilded wooden frame.

Francesco Tironi, Venetian painter and engraver, is recognised as one of the last vedutisti active in 18th-century Venice. Biographical information on him is relatively scarce, but his work is appreciated by collectors for its significant contribution to the Venetian veduta of the 1700s. His style follows the tradition of Francesco Guardi (Venice 1712 – Venice 1793), with a chromatic palette alternating brown tones with sudden touches of light, producing an effect that is more atmospheric than calligraphic. The painting represents an uncommon subject within Tironi’s output, which is usually devoted to Venetian views: here the painter turns his attention to the Veneto countryside, depicting a rural hamlet dominated by a tower building, set against a hilly landscape opening toward the plain. Along the bank of a waterway in the foreground, shepherds with sheep and cattle animate the scene. The colours and tones typical of Tironi are fully present, from the luminous clouds in the sky to his characteristic figures, this time dressed as country people rather than gondoliers. The stylistic comparison with documented works firmly attributes the canvas to Francesco Tironi.

Condition report: Relined canvas. Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface, with signs of aging and wear.
