Oil on paper laid on canvas, in a contemporary 19th-century frame.

An academically trained painter, Beaucé is known for his military and hunting scenes of the second half of the 19th century, notable for their accurate rendering of uniforms and animals. The painting depicts a deer hunt with equestrian figures in 18th-century uniforms and a pack of hounds bringing down a stag at the edge of a river. The composition recalls the court hunting tradition of Flemish and French derivation, reinterpreted through a Romantic 19th-century sensibility.
