Description

Lilian Harrison (British, late 19th – early 20th century) – Highland Cattle in a Lakeside Landscape.

Oil on canvas, unframed.

Signed lower left: “Lilian Harrison.”

The scene depicts a herd of Highland cattle gathered on the shores of a mountain lake, in a landscape reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands. In the background, mountain ranges slope down toward the lake, shrouded in a sky of shifting clouds. In the foreground, four animals with characteristic fawn coats and prominent horns enliven the grassy shore, while the vegetation—heather, bushes, and patches of wild grass—is rendered with loose brushstrokes. The composition follows the Victorian tradition of Scottish animal landscape painting, with particular attention paid to the rendering of northern light and the characterization of the subjects.
