Description
Lucia Ponga degli Ancillo (Venice 1887 – 1966) – Venetian Capriccio with Jetty, Gondola and Staffage Figures.
Oil on panel, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
Signed lower left: «L. Ponga».
Lucia Ponga degli Ancillo developed her art within the Venetian milieu of the late 19th and early 20th century, specializing in landscape and lagoon views rooted in 19th-century tradition. This oil on panel depicts a lagoon shore with a porticoed building and a bell tower on the left, cypresses and trees at the centre, and a jetty animated by townsfolk engaged in everyday activities. In the foreground a gondola with gondolier, while sailing boats open onto the lagoon in the background. The staffage figures recall the manner of Francesco Guardi, rendered with a loose and vibrant brushwork and a luminous palette dominated by greens and the blues of sky and water.
Condition report: Good state of conservation of the wooden support and the painted surface. Signs of aging and wear consistent with the period.
