Description
Lucia Ponga degli Ancillo (Venice 1887 – 1966) – Venetian Capriccio with Ruins, Boats and Staffage Figures.
Oil on panel, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
Signed lower left: «L. Ponga».
Lucia Ponga degli Ancillo developed her art within the Venetian milieu of the late 19th and early 20th century, specializing in landscape and lagoon views rooted in 19th-century tradition. This small oil on panel depicts a Venetian capriccio featuring ruined architecture, a bell tower, rustic buildings, and a shore animated by fishermen and townspeople, with sailing boats and gondolas on the water. The composition draws on the Venetian veduta tradition, with staffage figures recalling the Canalettian repertoire, rendered here with a loose and vibrant brushwork characteristic of late 19th-century Venetian taste. The palette, dominated by the greens of the foreground cypress and bright skies, gives the scene a well-controlled chromatic liveliness.
Condition report: Good state of conservation of the wooden support and the painted surface. Signs of aging and wear consistent with the period.
