Description
European painter in the Chinese manner (18th century) – Oriental scene with pagoda and bridge.
Oil on canvas, in carved and gilded wooden frame.
The composition, executed on a black ground, depicts an exotic landscape dominated by a pagoda with a bulbous dome and an arched bridge with a decorated profile, set among palm trees and shrubs. The absence of figures in the foreground emphasises the purely landscape character of the scene, rendered with the customary gold and red details typical of European chinoiserie of the eighteenth century.
Condition report: Lined canvas. Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface, with signs of ageing and wear.
