Description
Italian painter (17th–18th century) – Seated Franciscan friar writing (preparatory sketch).
Oil on panel, in wooden frame.
The painting depicts a Franciscan friar, identifiable by his ochre-coloured habit, seated and absorbed in writing or reading a document. The composition is set within an oval trompe-l’œil format, a decorative device widely employed in Italian small-format painting between the 17th and 18th centuries. Architectural elements and an open landscape are visible in the background, lending depth to the scene. The loose brushwork and predominantly brown palette, with cool highlights in the background, are consistent with the Italian Naturalist tradition of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Condition report: Good condition overall, with signs of age and wear.
