Description

Venetian painter (late 19th – early 20th century) – Venice, view of St. Mark’s Square with the Basilica and the Bell Tower.

Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.

The painting depicts St. Mark’s Square brought to life by a few passersby and pigeons, with St. Mark’s Basilica in the foreground and the Bell Tower rising on the right. The rapid, Impressionist-style brushwork is typical of Venetian art produced between the 19th and 20th centuries, aimed at an audience of travelers and collectors. The small figures in the foreground evoke the typical repertoire of the Venetian veduta tradition.

Condition report: Original canvas. There are old restorations and repairs to the canvas, with some visible paint loss in the area of the Campanile.
