Description
Bentwood and carved office chair – Jacob & Josef Kohn, Vienna 1903/1904.
Bentwood and carved, original cane seat with spring mechanism.
A swivel office armchair with tilting seat, manufactured by the Viennese firm Jacob & Josef Kohn in the early twentieth century. The frame is in bentwood, with a turned spindle back, a carved scrolled top rail, and continuous curved armrests. The circular seat retains its original Vienna cane and is fitted with an automatic spring mechanism allowing the seat to tilt according to the sitter’s weight — a patented feature advertised in the Kohn catalogues of 1903 and 1904 as a “Neigefauteuil” (self-acting tilting armchair). The splayed legs are joined by a curved circular stretcher. The model is documented in the Kohn 1904 catalogue as Nr. 705.
Condition report: Good overall condition. Original Vienna cane seat intact. Minor wear to the wooden frame consistent with age.
