Description

Set of four carved wood armchairs. Italy, mid-19th century.

A set of four cherrywood armchairs, attributable to Italian workshops of the second quarter of the 19th century in the Charles X style.

The defining decorative element is the horizontal back rail centred by an oval medallion, pierced and carved with gilded foliate motifs. The armrests have a curved profile with a square-section joint at the seat; the front legs are straight and tapering, the rear legs sabre-shaped. The seat is in Viennese cane, with a loose cushion upholstered in light fabric.

Condition report: Generally good condition. Original Viennese cane seats intact; cushions of later date.
