Description

Follower of Francesco Guardi (Venice 1712 – Venice 1793) – Venice, view of St. Mark’s Basin with the Island of San Giorgio.

Oil on canvas, in a wooden frame.

Francesco Guardi is the leading figure of eighteenth-century Venetian view painting, celebrated for a highly free pictorial manner that dissolves architecture and figures into a fabric of vibrating light. The present painting follows in this stylistic tradition, evident in the rapid, feathered brushwork and warm palette, here rendered in olive and golden tones.

The view depicts St. Mark’s Basin looking toward the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, identifiable by the dome and bell tower of the Palladian basilica on the left. The broad, panoramic perspective conveys the bustle of lagoon traffic, with sailing boats and gondolas manned by figures whose foreground rendering recalls the typical Guardesque macchiette.

Condition report: Good conservation of the pictorial surface, yellowing of the varnish.
