Description
French painter (18th–19th century) – Reclining Female Figure.
Oil on canvas laid on panel, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
The painting depicts a reclining female nude, seen in profile against a green landscape background. The pose, the body slightly raised and the right arm lifted toward the head, belongs to an established academic tradition of the nude of French origin, widely practised between the late 18th and early 19th century. The soft, even treatment of the flesh and the warm ochre and reddish-brown drapery reflect a neoclassical pictorial culture attentive to the plasticity of the figure. The landscape in the background, suggested by tree masses and glimpses of sky, serves a purely decorative purpose.
Condition report: Good state of conservation of the painted surface; traces of old restorations and wear are present.
