Description
F. W. Kirtley (British, 19th century) – Mountain Landscape with Sheep.
Oil on canvas, in a gilded wooden frame.
Signed lower right: “F. W. Kirtley.”
A British painter active in the second half of the 19th century, F. W. Kirtley was part of the tradition of English Romantic landscape painting, with a particular focus on rural subjects from the Scottish Highlands. The painting depicts a sweeping landscape with a stream in the foreground, a flock of sheep grazing on a grassy slope, and a mountainous backdrop shrouded in moving clouds. The execution is meticulous in its rendering of the animals’ coats and the vegetation, while the cloud-streaked sky lends the scene an atmosphere typical of Victorian-era British landscape painting.
