Description
Italian painter (mid-19th century) – Portrait of a Lady with a Lapdog and Portrait of her Consort.
Oil on canvas, unframed.
The canvas depicts a young lady seated in three-quarter pose on a green velvet armchair with gilded carvings, dressed in a burgundy velvet gown with an embroidered white lace décolleté with floral motifs. Her dark hair, gathered in side ringlets and adorned with a rose, reflects the fashion of the years 1835–1845. The figure holds a small lapdog in her lap. To the right of the composition, an easel bears the portrait of an officer in a light blue uniform, presumably her husband, giving the work the character of a private double portrait. In the background to the left, an open window reveals a landscape with classical architecture and a white horse.
Condition report: Relined canvas. Good state of conservation of the painted surface.
